The challenge
of my to this project was to create an outdoor electric sauna in a
small suburban yard in the town of Ithaca with neighbors on all sides.
I designed the building to be simple and un-ostentatious so as to
not intrude on the neighborhood.
When the landscaping is complete, the stone patio that I created will
be a private area to cool down and relax after the sauna. I used irregular
flagstone to create a simple flowing pattern. |

The
interior is all northern white cedar. I buy it from a small, family
run mill in northern Vermont. It is great for saunas because it
has the lowest density of any north American species and high resistance
to expansion and rot. The smell is heavenly, not overwhelming like
some western red cedar. |

My goal with
the electric units I build is to give them the same feeling as traditional
wood fired saunas. Airiness, light, ventilation, and ambiance put
my saunas far ahead of your typical gym or hotel sauna. I also make
sure that they get as hot as you want them to! |
