OUTDOOR WOOD BURNING SAUNAS
NEXT
The freestanding wood burning sauna is often preferred by the sauna purist. Typically it is a small building set away from the main house. It usually has two rooms: a dressing room and the sauna room. The building is minimally insulated and should be somewhat airy. The woodstove provides more than enough heat to bring it temperatures above 200° F.
The lack of electricity in the building and rustic detailing makes it a respite from the high tech world we live in. The sauna on the left is tucked into the woods a short walk from the main house. Light in the sauna room is provided by a candle in the dressing room placed in front of a window, shown below.
The stove fits through a wall sleeve so that it can be fired from the dressing room. This keeps all of the fire tending debris out of the sauna and provides plenty of combustion air for the stove without causing drafts. An optional water tank, as seen at the lower left, provides hot bathing water.
